Jay Dicharry has impressive credentials, and all his writing is well referenced. It’s a good job, because there are certain aspects of debate which are controversial (barefoot running etc.) These are tackled in an intelligent, well argued way that refuses to move in one direction unless science can take us there. There are a good deal of running myths revealed in the book. If you have read books such as Born to Run then this is a good balance because, again, it keeps to the Science.
Personally I like to understand subjects in a good level of detail. Dicharry covers muscular structure, leg anatomy, gait analysis and various other topics in a good level of detail using clear analogies that make things very clear.
You will read mid way through the book with a deep understanding of the importance of posture and muscle stability in running.
Then for the best bit! There a set of anatomical tests to help you identify your muscular strengths and weaknesses. Dicharry explains which injuries are caused by which muscle problems and why. And of course, the last section of the book is how to fix yourself.
Why wouldn’t you want to give your body an MOT? This book is a great self help guide for any runner… I’d suggest it could save you a lot of money at the physio and help you avoid a lot on injury. When you’ve read the book and had a go at the exercises… read the Chi Running book next!
For those of you who are already well read in Chi Running I’d say this book is in 98% agreement with the Chi Running approach.
So – who has read it? Who agrees with me on how great this book is? I guess I didn’t point out any downsides. Does anyone else see any?
